Water on and off the field
Drinking plenty of water is all it takes to prevent dehydration, and thus should be an important part of football practices. Every player should have a water bottle close so that they can take quick water breaks or at least a swallow here and there. Always remember that if you prevent, punish, or otherwise use water as a motivational tool it is very counterproductive, and there are many other motivating paths that you can take. When players are hydrated and energized they will practice harder and learn more.
Conditioning: Five dot jump
Conditioning is meant to increase speed, endurance, and reaction time on the football field. This drills intention is to help quickness and accuracy on the field which will reduce errors and increase the chances of great plays. Setting up this drill is very simple, you will need five markers placed about a foot apart in an x formation with one of the dots being in the center surrounded by four other dots in a square formation.
The athlete starts at the edge of the mat placing their feet on two of the outer dots and proceeds to jump with feet together on the center spot and then out again quickly to the outer dots similar to a simple hop scotch motion. Next the player will jump touching each dot with on leg only, and then switch using the other leg. The next step is jumping on all five dots with both feet together. The last phase is really returning to the original starting phase of jumping together and apart, however this time the athlete will change directions after they have jumped to the outer dots. Because this drill is intended for accuracy and speed, it is recommended that players start out slow and deliberate and then speed up to their maximum time.
Steps to effectively block driving
When talking about the fundamentals of a great offense or defense, you have to know what a good driving and blocking techniques are. The most traditional or basic block is a drive block. It is a simple yet effective way to move your opponent. If the Defensive lineman is aligned slightly to the right of the offensive linemen then the drive block with pus the defender to the right. Execute the drive by bolting off the line with your play side foot; again if the play is happening on the left side then you will use your left foot. Move quickly and in a speed bursting motion, make solid contact with your opponent to drive them off in the direction that you want.
Football tackling 101
Learning how to perform a proper tackle is fundamental to the game of football. If you, or your players don’t take tackling seriously you will not stop the offense and could also cause injuries. Here are three important steps to practice:
First, you need to stop the opponent quickly so make sure to place yourself directly in front of the opponent’s path. You can do this by placing your foot between your opponent’s feet. At the same time you want to bring your arms back in anticipation for the next phase.
Second, thrust your other foot again squarely in front of your opponent and with all the momentum that you have brought to the tackle grab your opponent. At this point you are well planted in front and your head should be in direct contact. Never, ever, ever tackle with the top of your head down, keep it up and square against your opponent. A great way to insure that you are in the right position is to practice touching your facemask to the football of the opposing player.
Third, throw your hips up and hard as you drive the offensive player backwards. The squarer you are in the first step the easier it will be to perform the third step.

SearchMyCampus: The Year that was

I hate to sound cliche, but how time does fly! SearchMyCampus just completed its first year of existence, and it is quite amazing how far we’ve come in this time. It’s been a year of hits and near misses and despite all the grey hairs its added to each of our heads, we’ve come out of with far more experience and knowledge than we had when it started.
SearchMyCampus was launched in December 2007. The basic concept behind the website was that students had some common needs during their 3-5 years at college which could be resolved by other students, service providers (housing providers, tutors, book sellers, etc) and employers. They needed a means of publicizing their needs to people around their campus who could help them. SearchMyCampus allowed them to post online campus classified advertisements to list their need for jobs, housing, coaching, books, gadgets, transport and more. The additional value we created was establishing different classified websites for each university, effectively creating a portal for each campus e.g. Delhi University classifieds, Bangalore University classifieds, Osmania University classifieds etc. Therefore, students of each university could find what they need within their own campuses, thus making the solution more targeted towards their needs.
The initial goal was to take the product out to the market and let users tell us what they needed from it. We started with a basic prototype of the product with a vague idea about how it could be implemented. The product was first exposed to the public at a fest in Shri Ram College of Commerce, one of the top colleges in Delhi University. The response was far better than we had expected, and it helped us realize that jobs - part time jobs, internships and graduate jobs, seemed to be the most important need faced by every student, with housing and tutoring being close seconds.
Our goal for the next few months was to study product usage and modify the product based on user response. We used feedback from students to launch version 2 of SearchMyCampus in May 2008, only 6 months after its initial launch. This version was far more comprehensive in terms of features, and had a better interface and design. We streamlined categories to eliminate those that students weren’t using, added features like discussion forums and basic user accounts, and created better search features than those in the previous version. There was also a complete ugly-duckling-turns-to-swan transformation in terms of website design.
Our initial goal of using feedback from users to enhance value hasn’t changed and we are constantly working on modifying the product to better meet user needs. Over the past 6 months, we have added several features including a comprehensive classified ad management system, the option to receive responses via both e-mail and mobile, information blogs among others. The number of campuses we serve has also increased due to popular demand with several tier 2 and 3 cities and colleges being included in the list.
Apart from a strong product, user participation and content generation was also crucial to generate value. Creating awareness about SearchMyCampus in colleges across the country was therefore essential. We experimented with several promotional techniques over the past year. Besides visiting several college fests, we ran a short campaign on popular radio stations Fever 104 and Hit 95 FM. We also advertised on auto rickshaws around Delhi, focusing especially in the campus areas. The period for admissions in July-August was particularly important for us, with several fresher’s waiting to be initiated into our community. We were constantly present at campuses in Delhi during this time to publicize our services to students.
SearchMyCampus also enjoyed its 15 minutes of fame with several newspapers writing about us during the past year including the Hindustan Times, Education Times, Indian Express, and Metro Now. We were also featured on news channels like NDTV 24/7, NDTV Metronation and NewsX. This public validation of our product has encouraged us to continue with our efforts.
Our first big milestone was achieved in August 2008, with over 10,000 listings made on SearchMyCampus. The next 10,000 has been far quicker, and we should be achieving that within the next month.
Our biggest learning out of this year has been that communication is the basic problem that students face, and if we manage to create an efficient communication mechanism that serves students, employers and service providers, we can ideally resolve most basic problems including jobs, housing, and coaching. Our focus over the next year is therefore on encouraging user participation to create 2 way communications. This can be done by creating awareness about our services and making our product accessible to all potential users. We have several new ideas in the pipeline to facilitate the same, and the end of 2009 should hopefully see us in a different position than what we are in now.

Your attitude while on campus will determine your success in college or university. If you have time, consider part-time work during the school year and definitely work during the summers, in your related fields if possible. Besides making some of your own extra spending money, you will learn to deal with different people. You can only develop these people skills with interactions with others outside the classroom.
This is why a well-rounded B+ average individual with good people skills, will do better rather than the A+ bookworm who has the personality of a doorknob. One of the secrets to being a success in college or university is to pick up something new either through extracurricular activities or a course that’s outside of your usual program. I remember when I was in high school, I would be studying for tests and exams in my room while my radio was turned up really loud. It just felt like a cool thing to do. And I got through high school well enough to get into university. When I started university, I of course used the same study methods since I thought they were my proven way. The result was that I almost ending up failing some of my first year courses.
It’s great listening to music blasting away in your room but if your head isn’t absorbing the stuff you’re suppose to be studying and your grades suffer, then you need a change in study environment. This means turning off the tunes until your study session is done. Can’t concentrate in your room or friends always interrupting? Then hit the library and find some quiet space.
Also, make a habit of studying regularly, even right after tests so that you will be prepared well in advance for the next one. This way, most course material will still be fresh in your mind by the time final exams come. This is one of the secret strategies college success or university success. Taking the time to study even when there are no exams just around the corner helps you learn your material so much better so you won’t have to do any last minute cramming for exams. This way of studying was a drastic change in my study habits. It was time consuming since I had to allocate regular study time during my days even when there were no exams in the near future. But it did work extremely well in helping me know the course material.
Back in high school, some teachers might have hassled you if your grades were low. At university or college, nobody is going to be on your case to study. This might sound good but if your study habits are lousy, you might end up failing out and many professors won’t really care. Again, I almost failed out of my first year and had to really improve on my studying to stay in. I did improve my grades well enough by my fourth year to get accepted into one of the MBA schools.
When I got to MBA school, it was a good thing that I had developed better study habits because we needed a B average to stay in the program. During our first semester, we lost about a quarter of our students because they couldn’t make that minimum B average.
There’s much more competition from other students for the top grades at this level of learning. It really pays to have good study habits. Good money was paid for your tuition so don’t fail out. Put in the time to study as if it was your full time job for the present. This will help insure that you are a college success or university success.
Of course, getting exposed to good external guest speakers on campus will also add to your college or university success since they often teach you about things that are not normally covered in your courses. Plus you don’t have to study the material presented by the guest speakers which is a welcome change.

How to overpower on the line of scrimmage
In various plays whether you are on offense or defense you will want to have a strategic advantage over your opponents. A great technique that will give you an advantage on the line is double team blocking. In essence you take two blockers or linemen and have them go after the same person. This technique is effective for punching a hole through the line and getting a running back through, or it also works great on a defensive blitz. To execute this properly have both linemen step together at the same time and lock their hips together. This forms an impenetrable line in the middle and as each lineman is on the edge of the opponent it will be very difficult to go around. Hit the shoulders hard and pin the opponent down as you drive them back. To be effective the double team has to work in a fast blitz like maneuver.
Proper Catching Leads to Great Ball Security
Catching the football properly and effectively is fundamental to a strong offense. There are three steps of a great catch: First, place your hands in front of you with your palms open and thumbs out forming an open triangle for the football. Second, follow the ball with your eyes from the first time you see it in the air until it is securely placed in a tight hold. Third, secure the ball tight and high against your ribs, forearm, and biceps. Bad habits can form easily as many receivers look away mid catch to scan the field for defenders. Taking your eye off the ball increases incomplete passes, fumbles, and turnovers. To prevent this, have two receivers throw to each other and as they catch it have them slow down the motion so that they pause at each catch, follow through and tuck.

We all know that getting decent grades are important for success in college or university. However, there is a lot more to just grades when it comes to doing well in college and university. The following are some great tips regarding lifestyle and personal balance on campus to help you.
Aiming for good grades doesn’t mean that you should spend 100% of your waking hours studying. In fact, being a total bookworm is not recommended, as you will not develop the appropriate social skills for a successful career if you are constantly isolated in a study room. You need a balance of studying, health and social in order to be a success in college or university. You should still take some time to do sports or exercise. Like study habits, it’s best to develop good fitness habits now because it will be darn hard later in life. If you don’t believe me, just take a good look outside or in a shopping mall. What do you see? Lots of unhealthy overweight people, right?
If you want to keep having a healthy body for many years to come, you have to keep physically active. It doesn’t matter whether you exercise through sports at school, outside clubs/leagues, with your friends or even on your own. Just be active. Find activities that you will enjoy. If you don’t know what you like, try different things out. You can play tennis, team sports like basketball, workout at one of the campus gyms, snowboard, do martial arts or even dance. The options are endless on college and university campuses.
Realize that one of the benefits of being on campus is that colleges and universities often have the best athletic facilities anywhere. Take advantage of this fact as everything there is for your use. Don’t be a slouch. Make sure that you have a decent diet too. Don’t overload yourself with junk food but don’t starve yourself either. You need good fuel to provide energy for exercise.
Make time for a social life too. Social interaction will of course help develop good skills for your future career. Partying is okay but if too much partying is affecting your college or university grades, then you have to cut down. Go ahead and party once your grades are back up but don’t let them sink again. Stay out of trouble with the law. Most colleges and universities have very strict rules regarding the use of illegal recreational drugs and crime. You don’t want a criminal record to prevent you from having a successful future career. It would be such a shame if you ruined your future career because you did something stupid that got you in trouble with the law, especially after all the hours and money you spent on college or university.
Finally, sit in on good external guest speakers on campus since they can teach you important skills that will help you become a success in college or university as well as after graduation. External speakers can expose you to useful or entertaining content that you would not otherwise get in your regular classes or lectures. They are usually free to attend and there will be no tests or exams based on what they speak about.
All of these lifestyle and personal balance tips will ensure that your college or university experience is well rounded, which gives you the most, benefits from your time on campus.
