Source: TechCrunch

Looking at the above chart, all industries are hiring lesser staff, some less than others. IT job listings are down 43 percent from a year ago. Healthcare is holding up the best with only an 8 percent decline, but nevertheless still a decline. Job postings in banking and financial services have decreased 48 percent (to 144,569), and media and newspaper job listings are down 47 percent (with only 24,104 postings).

The global economic recession has, without a doubt, taken its toll on job seekers’ hopes, as we are now experiencing what is called the employers’ market. Job opportunities have plunged, and it still can’t be seen when the number of jobs available will rise, although many contemplate it should be soon, since the only way to go after hitting rock bottom is up.

Some people choose to wait the recession out, but who knows for sure when the economy is likely to pick up, and what can one do in the meantime?

1.	Look at industry data

Despite the recession and the shortage of jobs, there are still research industries and job sectors that are encountering a shortage of workers or are still undergoing job growth. This is an area you may want to concentrate on in search of a job.

2.	Upgrade your skills

Skills are what employers look for when hiring, so the more specialized skills you have, the higher your chances of being hired. It would be a good idea to use the time you have while waiting for a job to pick up a new skill or hone an existing one.

3.	Try part-time or freelance work

If you’re not able to clinch a full-time job just yet, why not try working part-time or do freelance work instead first? These will definitely help with your expenses while you wait for a full-time job, and your future employer might very well take into account your enthusiasm and the skills you pick up while engaging yourself in such work. Moreover, you never know if your part-time or freelance job can lead to an attractive full-time one!

4.	Network, network, network

As much as we all complain about small talk and other networking pains, one cannot deny the impact it can have on one’s social and professional life, and even more so in such an economic climate. Think about it, with no one hiring, possibly your only chance of getting your foot in the door is by knowing someone on the inside and convincing them how you’d be a perfect fit in the company.

5.	Self-assessment

Before you even try to convince your employer about your strengths and how you’d be perfect for the job, perhaps you need to convince yourself first. Take some time to evaluate your interests, skills and strengths and how these can be a good fit with a company. Do a role play with someone objective and experienced to practise your answers to interview questions. Body language would also be a crucial deciding factor during the interview, so do make sure you are familiar with the dos and don’ts.

6.	Be active

No job is going to fall on your lap if you just sit around waiting. Getting your desired job requires you to be proactive in the search and application process, from start to finish. Do your homework before the interview by researching on the company and the position you applied for, and do a follow-up email after the interview to thank your interviewer(s), and at the same time, show your enthusiasm for the job. It may also be a good idea to let others know that you’re job hunting so that your friends and acquaintances can also keep a lookout for you. Keep trying!

7.	Learn to accept rejection

Many people wallow in their defeatist attitude and seriously, nothing ever comes out of that. Of course, nobody likes being rejected, and receiving countless rejections can lead to strong dejection, but think about it this way, people emerge from failures and rejections much stronger than before. Be ready to face countless rejections, but pull yourself up quickly because acceptance might be just round the corner.

8.	Start early

As they say, the early bird catches the worm! Start your job search early, even while you’re in school. Job hunting takes plenty of time and it would be useful to start your hunt early, and maybe even beat the crowd of graduates to a great opportunity.

9.	Be realistic

This usually means be willing to settle for less, especially so in this economic climate. People are getting laid off, companies are cutting costs a great deal, so be prepared for a slimmer paycheck during this period of time.

10.	Polish your resume

Be sure to update your resume! Moreover, remember how you thought you didn’t look good in that one-size-fits-all apparel? More so for a resume that must be tailored differently for every job application. To make your resume stand out to the employer, always place the most relevant experience or qualification first for every different job application.

Gone are the days where we actually need to physically go to individual companies or snail mail them our resumes. With everything done electronically these days, your best bet for getting a job is through an online job portal. Jobsites in a way help match make employers and employees by providing a platform for them to find each other and discover the good fit they make. Most jobsites are 100% free and it makes applying for jobs and submitting your resume very easy and convenient. Many fresh graduates like Leonard G. find their jobs successfully through online Canada jobs sites, and have found very fulfilling and rewarding jobs, thanks to the great accessibility provided by these job-seeking platforms in Canada.

Remember, be active in your job pursuit, and be realistic. Best of luck!

People frequently lift and carry heavy objects around, and if this is not done properly and safely they can suffer with the misery and discomfort of being afflicted by back pain and strain related injuries. There are all kinds of weighty items that need to be moved around from one place to another that are not only back-breaking but very tiring.

Happily there is a quick and simple way to avoid this happening by taking the burden out of this task by smoothly sliding anything from A to B by pulling the special straps of a moving device without any risk of back strain. This form of manoeuvre takes away the struggle associated with heavy weights.

In the Garden

It helps to put the fun factor into making the life of gardeners so much easier.
Is less tiring and more pleasurable than having the chore of humping around the myriad of heavy things from one place to another in the garden.
Makes light work of moving heavy and awkward items, not only in the garden but indoors as well.

Can negotiate steps, inclines, tricky turns and tight spaces.
Has scores of uses such as clearing the garage, moving large plant pots, large compost bags, cement bags, tree trunks, paving slabs, statues and many other such objects. Saves time and physical effort by eliminating the need for extra help.

In the Conservatory

Moving heavy plant pots is so undemanding with the moving device.
Conservatory furniture can be slid into their desired position with ease.

In the Home

Maybe you are getting ready to move house, and even if you are on your own the moving device will enable you to move the heavy boxes for clearing the rooms. It is also indispensable for moving furniture out of the way for spring cleaning. decorating and even for shuffling items around until they are just in the position you would like.

Even if you are a small, lightweight person, you would be able to pull a full chest of drawers and laden bookcase - though if it is a tall one someone would be needed to keep it steady.

A fridge-freezer and a washing machine can be just slid along without the floor getting torn. No need to empty out the filing cabinet and having papers piled on the table, just slide it to where you want it to go.

The settee and armchairs are lovely and comfortable to sink into and relax, but they can be quite bulky and very heavy. To move these from one room to another would require some lifting and would need to be lifted by at least two strong people at one end to up-end it onto the moving device. One person could slide the settee with the straps and an assistant or two holding and supporting the top end of the settee. This is a very neat and easy way to cope with a weighty, bulky item for going through doorways and tight corners.

The moving device is stable, has a large capacity, is portable and rolls up for easy carriage and storage.

Vernon Wyndham is the inventor of a patented product for
moving heavy loads
around the house and garden with ease, and without back-breaking lifting. For more information and the benefits of this product, please refer to:

The accepted methods of cleaning in household and industrial environments has traditionally included the use of synthetic chemicals that have been found to present certain hazards to both public health and the environment. Concerns about these negative effects has resulted in the development of new compounds and technologies that depend on the use of natural, organic elements that can produce equal or improved cleaning actions without endangering the well-being of either humans or the environment.

Nearly all of the cleaning solutions that have traditionally been used for various cleaning functions were composed of chlorinated hydrocarbons. These compounds, although effective enough, presented the possibility of serious health issues and environmental damage due to their carcinogenic characteristics. These harmful elements would make their way into soil content and water tables by way of water treatment processes that did not sufficiently filter out these carcinogens. Additionally, cleaning solutions that were used in the household environment, such as carpet cleaning solutions and everyday chemical cleaners, presented immediate exposure to their harmful elements through physical contact and inhalation.

The concerns about these long-term negative effects led to more research into environmentally-friendly cleaning products and methods that would be able to attain sufficient levels of removing dirt, stains, and other debris without the use of dangerous substances. This research resulted in the discovery of the cleaning properties of organic elements - such as ethanol, sodium carbonate, and citric acid - that would produce the same caustic action that synthetic solutions relied on to remove dirt and stains from surfaces and fabrics.

Ethanol, more often associated with alcoholic beverages and bio-fuel products, is actually an organic element that is the by-product of the fermentation of yeast sugars, and is the main component of vinegar. The activation of enzymes when vinegar is applied as a cleaning agent causes debris to be loosened from the surfaces to which it adheres. Vinegar is generally diluted with water to reduce the possibility of inadvertent damage to the surface it is applied, such as fading of colors in fabrics.

Sodium carbonate is an organic substance that is more commonly referred to as baking soda or washing soda. These forms of sodium carbonate have been used for many years by many cultures as an effective general cleaner. It is especially effective in removing petroleum-based elements, such as grease and oil. This is due to the ability of sodium carbonate to prevent magnesium and calcium ions from binding to water molecules, thus increasing the cleaning action of soap and water solution, such as detergents.

Citric acid has also been found to be extremely effective in the removal of those elements that stain fabrics and surfaces more readily. The use of lemon juice specifically is an effective stain remover. The citric acid in lemon juice not only acts as a caustic agent that loosens elements from surfaces, but also has a lightening characteristic that can remove discoloration that can be a side effect of some types of stains, such as coffee and blood stains.

The introduction of the use of environmentally-friendly cleaning elements such as these has had a significant effect on reducing the possibility of health risks and environmental damage.

If you can’t remember the last time you had a good night’s sleep, it could well be your rickety old bed (not your stressful lifestyle) that’s to blame. We spoke to the best in the bedding business to get this top advice on shopping for a new bed.

1. Invest in quality

Nigel Cairns of Bedworld says, ‘The one golden rule is that you pay for what you get. The more you pay for your new bed or mattress then the better the quality will be.’ A bed will continue to lose its comfort and support year after year so buy the most expensive one that you can afford. A good quality bed should last ten years.

2. The seven year itch

According to the Sleep Council, ‘the critical ’seven year itch’ can be a make or break moment for many marriages and mattresses’. If your mattress is more than seven years old it almost certainly needs replacing. Decide whether you want an open coil, pocket sprung, latex or foam mattress with the help of our Buyer’s guide to mattresses. But first take the Sleep Council’s MOT quiz and assess the state of your sleeping equipment.

3. Roll around

Try the bed in all of the sleeping positions you tend to use, not only on your back,’ says Lucy Benham, assistant buyer for beds at John Lewis. ‘Place your hand in the small of your back and try to move it about. If it moves too easily, the bed may be too hard for you; if it’s a struggle to move your hand, then the bed is too soft. If you can move your hand with just a little resistance, the bed may be just right for you.’ Sleep easy on this Hotel 4-poster bed from John Lewis.

4. To slat or not?

Adam Black, of bed specialists Feather & Black says, ‘Flat wooden slats are the equivalent of placing the mattress on the floor. Always opt for a sprung base, be it a sprung divan or sprung beech slats.’ Foam mattresses are ideal for slatted bases as the springs on other mattresses will push through the slats over time and shorten the life of your mattress. Their Well Base bed (£654.75 for a super-king) combines the comfort of a divan with the contemporary look of a bed base. Superior style and comfort. Stephen George, bedroom furniture buyer for Harrods, is even more specific. ‘If going for slats, we recommend that they should be sprung timber slats, not be more than 6cms apart,’ he says.

5. Supersize me

‘Opt for the largest bed size the room can accommodate’, says Black. ‘Small beds are fine when you are getting on well with whoever you share it with, but tend to seem much smaller at those other times’. The Sleep Council says a regular four foot six double bed gives two sleepers less space than the size of a baby’s cot. But, warns Toby Ash of New Heights, ‘Consider the other furniture you have in the room and ensure that you have sufficient space around the bed to make the room functional. Mark out the size of the bed you are considering on your floor to ensure it is not going to be an obstacle.’ Feather & Black’s regal-looking Highgrove bed from will ensure sweet dreams.

6. Upholstered headboard

‘Solid wooden beds will last longer than veneered ones,’ says Adam Black. ‘Buying upholstered headboards which have removable covers makes sense. You can clean and dry-clean the covers once in a while and you can always give your bedroom a facelift by updating the fabric on the headboard.’ As for the end of the bed, Toby Ash of New Heights says ‘high footboards can look great in large rooms with high ceilings but taller people may find a low footboard more comfortable and less restrictive.’

7. Keep the bed bugs away

Sensitive types should opt for a hypo-allergenic mattress like this king-size Rockingham mattress from The Conran Shop which will help asthma and breathing problems. Their anti-dust mite properties will stop you from sneezing all night long.

8. Matchmaker, matchmaker

How do you match the mattress to the base? ‘These days almost all quality mattresses perform just as well on a slatted base as they would on a sprung divan,’ says Black. However, he warns salesmen will confuse customers by linking mattress performance to a particular base to make a double sale.

9. Guest beds

Guest/folding and storage beds provide flexible solutions for overnight guests. With a small bedroom, it makes sense to use your bed as a secondary storage option. Opt for a Platinum raised inflatable aerobed from John Lewis.

10. Ready built or flat pack?

Make sure you find out from retailers whether they will deliver the bed in one piece or whether you’ll need to put it together yourself. These days there are flat pack options that extend far beyond IKEA. The Bourne double bed from Furniture123 is simple and chic.

The increasing concerns over the effects of chemicals on the environment as well as public health has resulted in new approaches to cleaning. This includes new methods of eco-friendly housekeeping that can be just as effective in removing dirt, stains, and other debris from household surfaces while reducing the possibility of causing damage to the environment, as well as to the well-being of the human beings that live in the household.

The traditional cleaning products that have been in use for many years have depended upon man-made chemical solutions for cleaning. The majority of these types of cleaning solutions included elements that have been found to cause serious health issues from long-term exposure, as well as long-lasting negative effects on ground water and soil content. This is due to the fact that most of these chemicals contain chlorine mixed with hydrated carbons, which have been found to have a high carcinogenic risk factor. Additionally, these chlorinated hydrocarbons have a greater density, which allows for them to penetrate more deeply into water sources and soil.

There are newer methods of eco-friendly housekeeping that include the use of natural elements that can produce equally effective results without presenting the possibility of toxicity and environmental damage that synthetic chemical cleaning solutions do. The common challenges to cleaning household surfaces, such as floors, rugs and carpets, windows, appliances, and countertops are in removing grease and oil, food and beverage stains, various forms of dirt and debris. Another challenge to household cleaning is presented by high levels of mineral content, otherwise known as hard water.

White distilled vinegar is one such organic substance that is an effective cleaner that is applicable in many different types of household debris. The acidic quality of vinegar, a by-product of sugar fermentation, makes it useful for freeing dirt and water scaling from surfaces and fabrics. It also has disinfectant properties that fight bacterial growth. A solution mixed at the ratio of 1 cup of vinegar per 1 litre of water makes an effective all-purpose surface cleaner for countertops and appliance surfaces. ¼ cup of vinegar in a clothes washing cycle will remove dirt as well as disinfect and deodorize clothing. A mixture of ¼ cup of vinegar into a medium-size spray bottle with water is also useful for window and mirror cleaning.

Baking soda is another versatile cleaning product that is organic in nature and thus very applicable for eco-friendly cleaning. The main element of soda is sodium carbonate, a natural mineral, that has many uses. Baking soda can be used as an abrasive for scouring surfaces, such as bathroom and kitchen fixtures. It also is an effective deodorizer for plumbing drains when mixed with vinegar. Resistant oven grease can be removed by mixing baking soda and water to form a paste that can be scrubbed into the stains and left standing for a long enough time to be removed by a sponge or steel wool pad.

Lemon juice is another eco-friendly cleaning product that is very versatile. It is most effective for removing stains, especially in clothing fabrics due to its ability to brighten fabrics when applied to the rinse cycle.

Art insider Angie Davey says forget the rules when hanging paintings. And, as the current creative director of leading online gallery Eyestorm, she should know. Here, Angie shares her tips on hanging paintings to bring out their full potential.

1. Pick your room

First things first, decide which room your art suits. Consider the room’s mood and painting’s subject matter, medium, colour and size. Find out how mydeco helps you match your art to your home and watch all our art videos for more tips and inspiration.

2. Wall sizes and shapes

Don’t fill every free wall with art. Decide where to hang art and where to keep it clear. Look at your furniture and the shape of the wall space around it. Prime locations for a larger piece of art might be above a low backed sofa or a dining table. Higher cabinets fill the wall space so there’s no need to place art near one.

3. Make your room seem bigger

Strong vertical lines in the artwork, frame or wall arrangement can add a sense of height in a room. Horizontal lines give the illusion of width so are best for narrow rooms.

4. Water allergy

High humidity or water leakage potential in a room? Do not, we plead, hang paintings here. Be wary of hanging art in the bathroom, small kitchens, basements, by un-insulated exterior walls, above radiators and in the immediate vicinity of humidifiers, vaporisers or air vents. Keep art at a constant room temperature (between 18 and 25°C).

5. Let’s focus

It’s imperative to consider the central hanging point in each room. This is normally at the average person’s eye level - about 160cm from the floor, unless you have very high ceilings in your home. Hang work so that the centre of each piece sits at this point, meaning all the pictures will look consistent with each other, no matter what their size.

6. Group little ‘uns together

Hang small works together, either in a regimented order such as in rows, or in a cluster. The central hanging point should lie in the centre of the group so they are seen as a whole and look consistent beside other works in a room.

7. Fixtures and fittings

Most professionally framed work will have either string or wire already attached to the frame’s backing. If stringing the frame yourself, ensure you tie the knots securely. Unframed canvases look best hung flush against the wall: secure two nails or screws (depending on the wall) at identical heights and half the width of the work apart into the wall. They should stick out of the wall about 3cm. Your painting will sit flush and secure against the wall.

8. Use picture hooks for framed work

Picture hooks are better than nails or screws for hanging framed work. They distribute the painting’s weight more evenly, pulling from inside the wall, rather than just downwards. The picture hanging kit £33.95 from Graham & Green has all the tools you could possibly need.

9. Light up

Reach your art’s full potential with picture lights. Invest in daylight bulbs, like galleries do. Ultraviolet light found in sunlight and artificial lights can damage sensitive artwork. Even if your frame includes special UV-filtering glass, it should never be hung in direct or bright indirect sunlight. Ordinary incandescent light bulbs are safer than fluorescent or halogen bulbs.

10. Clean your art

A soft cloth should be used to wipe over frames, and a soft brush for paintings. Cleaning products contain harsh chemicals and should not be used for art.
